Run, or run from Vista?
eWeek.com did a nice slide show on “Reasons to Run to—and from—Vista”.
It’s a good quick read on six pros and six cons for depoloying Vista, but it needs a couple of footnotes:
In the first slide, they describe UAC (User Account Control) as helping to make your computer safer. They don’t mention how obnoxious it is though. Any of the 20 or so Linux distibutions I played with and the Mac OS-X have FAR, FAR less obnoxious UAC systems. This is not hard to understand as both Linux and the Mac operating system are similar to Unix, and Unix had a UAC system some 20 years ago.
On slide 5, they mention “Windows Display Driver Model” and state that this new system means “fewer blue screens of death” - this is true. That may be because some of the new fatal errors are on white screens of death…
On slide 7, they state:
“Vista’s SuperFetch makes smarter use of available RAM, which means better responsiveness at boot-up.”
…as long as you have 4GB of RAM.
Run to—or from—Vista? Which one is for you? Educate yourself on this one or it WILL be a costly affair!
