Speedup Mozilla and Firefox web browsers

November 29, 2004  4:48 pm by Dan, posted in

Hi guys,

I just ran across a tip on speeding up the Mozilla and Firefox web browsers in _getting to_ websites.

Open your Mozilla or Firefox web browser window, type in “about:config” (without the quotes) and hit Enter.

Scroll down until you find “network.dns.disableIPv6″. Depending on your
version/browser, either:

a) Double-click on the “network.dns.disableIPv6″ wordage and the data will
change from ‘false’ to ‘true’, or
b) Type in “true” (without quotes) in the dialog box that comes up and click
Ok.

Close your Mozilla or Firefox web browser (all windows of this browser) and restart. Watch the speed in which the browser gets to the website and compare that to before…

When the IPv6 standardizes and becomes a standard this can be reset.

Enjoy!
Dan

    Notes on this tweak:

This also works on Netscape v7.2 and has been reported to be missing in the v1.3 series of Mozilla.

Opera is reported to not have the “about:config” tool available.

It’s not unusual, I suppose, that an Australian would be posting in an oriental language, but if anyone can translate the above comment for me I would appreciate it!

    Cheers!

I followed the instructions, but Firefox is still extremely slow. I compare (race) it with Slimbrowser. Slim wins hands down!

I have no idea why Firefox is so slow, I even DL’ed FireTune, but with no luck there either.

There is honestly no way I can help you on this due to a lack of information.

I have no idea what operating system you are running, the specs of your computer or your Internet connection, etc., nor is this a tech support blog.

However, Slimbrowser appears to be simply a ‘browser overlay” as it requires the existance of Internet Explorer in order to install.

Based on the requirement of Internet Explorer alone, I personally would not use that product as an Internet browser.
